Artisan Collective Port Stephens

Artisan Collective Port Stephens is an artist-run gallery and retail space on the ground floor of D’Albora Marina in Nelson Bay, Newcastle. It brings together locally made Australian art, handcrafted giftware and other artisan products, with items sold directly from the makers. For visitors wanting something connected to the Port Stephens area, the focus is on unique, high-quality work rather than mass-produced souvenirs.

The collective was established after Port Stephens Council approached local artists and makers in 2016 about creating a shared space for their work. The group first operated from a vacant shop in Nelson Bay’s CBD in 2017, transforming it into a gallery and retail venue. When that site had to be vacated at the end of 2018, the collective moved to its current marina location. Its development was supported by the Port Stephens Smart Arts program, a partnership involving Port Stephens Council, Octapod and The Business Centre Newcastle.

This is more than a shopfront. The collective describes its space as a place for artists to share, collaborate and support one another, while inviting the wider community into the creative life of the area. It holds exhibitions, activities and artist talks, and has also been involved in projects including the 2019 Love Seafood Art Trail and the ‘Dress up Nelson Bay’ initiative, which used local art and handmade products to enliven otherwise empty shopfronts. The stated aim is to create a welcoming, professional environment where local, visiting, emerging and established artists can meet.

Artisan Collective suits visitors looking for locally made gifts, people interested in regional art, and locals keen to support independent makers. The gallery is open seven days a week, with the website listing winter trading from 10am to 4pm and summer trading from 9am to 5pm.
