Hunter Wetlands National Park

Hunter Wetlands National Park is a nature-focused escape close to Newcastle, with two distinct sections: the Kooragang area to the east and Hexham Swamp, also known as Burraghihnbihng, to the west. Its wetlands are internationally recognised, and the park contains the second-largest area of mangroves in New South Wales. That combination of estuaries, mangroves, rainforest and other wetland habitats gives the park a strong sense of place, while creating plenty of opportunities to see native wildlife.

Birdwatching is one of the park’s main draws. More than 200 bird species live in or migrate through the Hunter estuaries, and Stockton Sandspit, beside Stockton Bridge, is highlighted as a popular place to observe shorebirds. Curlews and avocets are among the birds that use the area to rest and feed. Around Riverside Park, visitors may also spot pelicans, cormorants and sea eagles. The variety of birdlife and changing wetland environments make this a rewarding place for both keen birdwatchers and visitors who simply want to spend time outdoors.

There are ways to experience the water as well as the land. Fishing is available from the jetty at Riverside Park, with the park’s information noting that visitors can bring a fishing rod or handline. Guided kayak adventures at Smiths Island are another option for exploring the wetland landscape. The park also has traces of its past, including an old World War II radar station and the ruins of Milham’s Farmhouse, adding a historical dimension to the walks.

Hunter Wetlands National Park also offers a reminder that these habitats support species under pressure. The endangered green and golden bell frog is specifically recognised in the park’s information, reflecting the importance of protecting its wetlands and surrounding ecosystems.
