Why it's worth checking out
The Oriental Hotel, known locally as The Ori, is a family-run pub on the corner of Bull and Bruce streets in Cooks Hill, close to Newcastle’s centre. Originally built in 1889, it retains a casual, relaxed character rather than leaning into the feel of a gaming venue. There are no pokies, TAB, Keno or sports-gambling features, making it an option for a straightforward drink, meal or catch-up.
Food centres on hand-stretched pizza made with quality tomatoes and Fior di Latte mozzarella. The menu covers familiar choices such as Margherita, Pepperoni and Hawaiian, alongside more distinctive combinations including Spring Lamb, Chilli Prawn & Chorizo, Truffle Mushroom and Hot Honey. There are also salads, pizza squares, kids’ pizzas and vegan and gluten-free add-ons. The kitchen runs each evening, giving the venue a practical choice for a casual dinner as well as drinks.
The intimate bar has a broad drinks selection, with eight beers on tap, a craft beer range, wines, cocktails and non-alcoholic options. The atmosphere changes through the week: weekdays are positioned as a quieter time for a beer and pizza, while weekends bring live music. Local bands, duos, trios and solo performers play original music on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and the venue also welcomes musicians interested in booking a gig.
Upstairs, boutique accommodation gives visitors another way to use the venue, with gift cards redeemable across the bar, kitchen and rooms. The Ori suits locals meeting friends, small groups looking for food and live music, and visitors wanting to stay near Newcastle’s centre. A kids’ menu makes it workable for families, while the intimate bar and regular performances also offer an easy setting for a solo drink or a low-key evening out.
