Straitjacket

Straitjacket is a Newcastle gallery focused on curated solo, group and represented-artist exhibitions. Its programme is centred on contemporary art and is intended to give artists a professional place to exhibit and sell their work, while presenting exhibitions that examine and question contemporary ideas.

The gallery was established in July 2022 by Newcastle artists Dino Consalvo and Ahn Wells. Their approach is closely tied to the idea behind the name Straitjacket: encouraging artists to move beyond creative constraints and produce their strongest work. Wells previously ran Gallery 139 in Newcastle, giving the partnership an established connection to the local arts community.

The exhibition programme includes presentations by artists such as Gillian Bencke, Liam Power, Virginia Cuppaidge, Patrick Mavety, Felicity O’Connor, Hide Kobayashi and others. The site also lists a book launch, a silent auction supporting Save Our Arts, and the Summer Salon.
