Why it's worth checking out
Walka Water Works is a historic picnic and recreation area in Oakhampton, Maitland, centred on a large lake and a substantial 19th-century industrial complex. The heritage pumping station dates back to 1887, with an imposing chimney and detailed brickwork that reflect the site’s former purpose. The complex is described as one of the largest and most intact industrial sites of its era in the Hunter Valley.
The lake and surrounding bush provide a setting for walking and spending time outdoors, with varied trails around the water and through the reserve. More than 300 bird species have been recorded here, and the lake is also home to freshwater native turtles, giving visitors plenty to look out for beyond the built heritage. With free entry and open space for picnics, it suits families, casual daytime visits, birdwatchers and anyone interested in Maitland’s industrial history.
Some parts of Walka Water Works remain closed while remediation work continues. Temporary fencing is being used in areas where access is restricted, so visitors should check the latest information from Maitland City Council before setting out. The site is at 55 Scobies Lane, Oakhampton, within the Maitland area.
