Why it's worth checking out

Bread & Brewery is a small-batch brewery in Newcastle with a strong sense of personality, built around beer, conversation and a deliberately unconventional approach to brewing. The venue describes itself as a pico-brewery, with a rotating line-up of beers ranging from crisp lagers and hazy pale ales to double IPAs, porters, amber bocks and sours. Visitors can come in for a beer, ask about the current specials or book a tasting that promises more than a standard paddle-and-snack experience.

The regular beers show plenty of variety. Over the Hill is a 4% lager created for Tocal Field Days’ 40th birthday, while Return to Sender combines pale lager, pale ale and IPA characteristics in one oated beer. Hop-focused drinkers may gravitate towards DD Smash, a hazy pale ale built around Nectaron hops, or Wreck It, a 6.7% double IPA made with a substantial amount of hops. There are darker options too, including Brownie McBrown Ale, Beer Blanket honey chipotle porter and By the Horns smoked amber bock. For something lighter and tart, 50 Shades of GhOStE brings lime and mandarin sour flavours to the list.

Food is casual and flexible rather than a full restaurant offering. The brewery stocks Pascal’s Pork Scratchings, Shhmoakesys gourmet pies and locally made Mandalong Farm hot sauces, with pies available until they sell out. It is also a BYOF venue, so guests can bring their own food to enjoy alongside the beer. That makes the space practical for a relaxed catch-up, a tasting session or a low-key group visit where the drinks are the main focus.

The setting reflects the brewery’s interest in re-use and resourcefulness. Much of the fit-out has been recycled or upcycled, including a living wall made from discarded pallets and a bar front assembled from salvaged timber. The same thinking extends to the brewing process: spent grain, one of beer-making’s major by-products, is donated to the local chicken rescue Let The Ladies Go while the team works towards using it in future breads, scones and biscuits.

Bread & Brewery was started by three people: Jay Beckham, the brew chef and self-described “mad scientist”; Paul McGregor, who handles sales; and Dale Beckham, who works behind the scenes and as CFO. That hands-on story gives the venue a more personal feel than a conventional taproom. It should appeal to beer drinkers who enjoy trying different styles, groups looking for an informal tasting and anyone interested in a brewery with a distinctive recycled fit-out and a clear sense of humour.
