Fly Point Park

Fly Point Park sits at Fly Point in Nelson Bay, with the reserve extending across 8 hectares from the car park on Dixon Drive through to Little Beach. A network of walking paths winds through the wooded headland, making it a straightforward place to spend time outdoors and explore the native planting.

The reserve is suited to a bush picnic, and the council also identifies it as a setting for outdoor weddings and private ceremonies. Its gardens include native species such as kangaroo grass, dianella lilies, hibbertia, Christmas bush, blueberry ash, gymea lilies and several varieties of pine. The area also provides habitat and feeding grounds for native birds, including kookaburras and rainbow lorikeets, as well as gliders and microbats.

Fly Point has a layered local history. The headland once held buildings associated with the HMAS Assault campsite during the Second World War and later served as a migrant camp, before most of the buildings were removed in 1952. The Port Stephens Native Flora Garden Committee, now the Fly Point Nature Reserve Group, was formed in 1982 and helped establish the gardens. Regular working bees continue on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, with volunteers maintaining the paths and removing weeds. It is a practical choice for walkers, birdwatchers, picnic groups and anyone looking for a quieter natural setting near Little Beach.
