Why it's worth checking out

Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is a gallery and creative community space in Nelson Bay, Newcastle, with a changing exhibition program and a broad range of arts and crafts under one roof. Exhibitions change approximately every six weeks, giving visitors a reason to return and see different work. The website’s listings include exhibitions devoted to sketches, creative textiles, black-and-white work and polymer clay, alongside featured artists and members.

The centre offers more than a gallery visit. Its arts and craft groups cover bonsai, embroidery, leatherwork, life drawing, mosaics, painting, paper craft, patchwork, pottery, printing, polymer clay, spinning and weaving, woodwork and other creative pursuits. These groups meet regularly, creating opportunities for people to practise their skills, share knowledge and take part in a welcoming local community. The Creative Textiles group, for example, experiments with fabric, plastic, wood, feathers, paper, wire and dyes, manipulating materials through stitching, folding, layering and other techniques.

There is a strong sense of history in the site itself. The buildings were constructed in 1942–43 as part of HMAS Assault, a naval training centre, and the surviving hospital building later served as a migrant hostel hospital and then a community hospital until 1981. That year, the Port Stephens Society of the Arts acquired the former hospital premises and began developing the cultural centre. Since then, the site has grown to include gallery spaces, craft rooms, pottery facilities, a woodworkers’ shed, gardens and a café area. Wheelchair access is also available.

Visitors can browse the gallery, see work produced by local members and, where available, purchase handmade goods such as leatherwork created by the centre’s members. The garden café operates for special events, which have included community gatherings with morning tea, demonstrations, raffles, plant sales and activities. The centre suits solo visitors who enjoy browsing exhibitions, people looking for locally made craft, and groups interested in creative activities or community events. Its mix of exhibitions, working craft groups, gardens and heritage buildings makes it a grounded, community-focused stop in Nelson Bay rather than a gallery limited to a single medium.
