Newcastle Memorial Walk

Newcastle Memorial Walk is a 450-metre coastal walkway with broad outlooks across Newcastle’s coastline, the city and the Hunter Valley. It offers a combination of scenery and civic history, making it more than a simple route from one point to another. The walk forms part of the Bathers Way, a six-kilometre coastal path linking Merewether Ocean Baths and Nobbys Beach.

Its defining feature is a 160-metre bridge along the clifftop. Steel silhouettes of soldiers line the structure, while close to 4,000 family names are inscribed in recognition of nearly 11,000 known Hunter Valley men and women who enlisted during the First World War. These details give the walk a strong sense of place and encourage visitors to pause and take in the memorial rather than treating it only as a lookout.

The memorial was created to mark the centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli and the beginning of steelmaking in Newcastle. It also honours the men and women of the Hunter region who served their community and country. That combination of military remembrance, local industry and coastal setting makes the site relevant to visitors interested in Newcastle’s history and heritage, as well as those exploring the city on foot.

The site sits on the traditional country of the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, whose continuing relationship with the land is acknowledged by the City of Newcastle.
