Why it's worth checking out
Tomaree Mountain is a standout natural attraction in Nelson Bay, Newcastle, centred on the Tomaree Head Summit walk in Tomaree National Park. The route is a short but demanding 2.2km return hike, with a suggested walking time of around 1.5 to 2 hours. Rated Grade 5, it includes steep sections and requires sturdy shoes, drinking water, a hat and sunscreen. Paved areas may become slippery when wet, so conditions are worth considering before setting out.
The reward is a series of broad coastal outlooks from the summit, which rises 161m above the entrance to Port Stephens. From the north platform, walkers can look across Yacaaba Head, Cabbage Tree, Boondelbah and Broughton islands. The south platform takes in Zenith, Wreck and Box beaches, Fingal Island and Point Stephens Lighthouse. These elevated views make the walk especially appealing to visitors who want to understand the shape of the coastline, whether they are visiting for the scenery, photography or a more active way to experience the national park.
There is also plenty of natural and historical interest along the way. Cabbage Tree and Boondelbah islands are nature reserves and the only known nesting sites in the world for the endangered Gould’s petrel. Between May and November, the walk can also be a good setting for whale watching, with binoculars recommended by the park service. A picnic table at the lookout provides a place to pause with a packed lunch or morning tea, although the attraction is primarily a walking and sightseeing experience rather than a food venue.
For visitors looking to explore further, Fort Tomaree walk and its historic World War II gun emplacements are suggested as an additional stop on the descent. The summit walk is best suited to people comfortable with a challenging track and steep sections, including active couples, small groups and solo walkers prepared for a self-guided hike. Families with older children may enjoy it if everyone is equipped for the grade and conditions, while the panoramic views offer a strong reason to take the climb at a steady pace.
