The University Gallery

The University Gallery is part of the University of Newcastle’s Galleries program and presents contemporary exhibitions shaped around ideas, research and a broad range of artistic practices. Located at the Callaghan campus in Newcastle, it offers a public-facing cultural experience within the university environment, with exhibitions and programs developed for students, staff and the wider community.

A visit can also provide a window into the University’s wider art and cultural work. The Galleries are responsible for developing and caring for the University Art Collection, which contains more than 3,000 individual works of art and culturally significant material. Their annual program is described as varied and dynamic, with an emphasis on collaboration between artists, researchers, students and cultural or community organisations.

First Nations perspectives are an important part of the program and practice. The University Galleries work with the Wollotuka Institute, First Nations curators, exhibitors and communities, while continuing to develop their substantial holding of First Nations work. The University Gallery is also located above the Senta Taft Hendry Museum, a dedicated knowledge-keeping place containing a culturally significant and diverse collection of items from Oceania. Together, these spaces give visitors the chance to engage with contemporary exhibitions alongside the university’s broader cultural collections and commitments.

The gallery suits solo visitors, students, art audiences and groups looking for a thoughtful exhibition visit rather than a commercial gallery experience. It is also a useful stop for people exploring the Callaghan campus or interested in the connections between art, education and research. The site lists gallery hours as Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 12pm to 4pm, with visits at other times available by appointment.
