Why it's worth checking out

Fly Point Aquatic Reserve is a protected marine sanctuary between Nelson Bay and Little Beach, with sweeping views across Port Stephens. Free to enter, it combines a coastal park setting with some of the area’s most accessible underwater attractions.

The reserve is particularly well suited to divers and snorkellers. Lush sponge gardens and kelp forests begin only a few metres from the beach, creating habitat for species including pineapple fish, blue groupers, octopus, wobbegong sharks and seahorses. During summer, juvenile tropical fish may also appear. The reserve extends from the high-water mark to 500 metres offshore and is part of the Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park’s sanctuary zone.

Fishing and collecting marine life, including shells, are prohibited, helping protect the underwater environment. Visitors can bring an underwater camera instead, while those staying on land can use the lookouts, picnic area and public toilet. The site is listed as family friendly, although the reserve does not cater specifically for people with access needs.

Access is via Victoria Parade, with a walk down the staircase opposite the amphitheatre from Neil Carroll Park. Fly Point suits visitors who want to explore the water, take in the bay views or enjoy a simple picnic in Nelson Bay. Its 4.6 Google rating from 185 reviews reflects strong visitor interest, though conditions and suitability for water activities should be considered before entering.
