Leichhardt’s Lookout

Leichhardt’s Lookout is a scenic viewpoint on the Yuelarbah walking track in Glenrock State Conservation Area, near Newcastle. Positioned about halfway along the 6.8-kilometre return walk, it looks across Glenrock Lagoon and provides a worthwhile pause within a broader bushland and coastal walk.

The track begins at a wheelchair-accessible raised boardwalk and follows Flaggy Creek through wet gullies and coastal rainforest. Along the way, walkers pass two waterfalls before reaching Glenrock Beach, with picnic opportunities at Flaggy Creek, the beach and the headlands. The full walk is suggested to take two to three hours and is graded 3, so it suits people looking for a moderately active outing rather than a quick roadside lookout stop.

It is a good option for a solo walk, a family day outdoors or a small group wanting views, wildlife and varied scenery in one visit. Bring drinking water, sun protection and, if you enjoy spotting birds and animals, binoculars. Dogs and other pets are not permitted in the conservation area. Check current alerts and access conditions before setting out, as track works, weather and fire danger can affect visits.
