Why it's worth checking out

Located in Pokolbin, Newcastle, Sutton Estate Hunter Valley brings together several hands-on activities in one 27-acre property. Its experiences are designed for celebrations, corporate team-building, group outings and casual visits with friends, with a mix of puzzles, tastings, physical challenges and relaxed cycling through the Hunter Valley.

The signature Wine Escape Room combines a 60-minute live-action puzzle game with a guided tasting of five wines. Set around the story of an eccentric winemaker called Dr Wealdo, the dark, atmospheric room challenges teams to follow clues, solve riddles and search for the hidden Immortal Wine before time runs out. It has scary elements, so the venue recommends the Chocolate Escape Room for visitors who prefer something gentler. That family-friendly option takes inspiration from Willy Wonka, with guests searching for a Golden Ticket while enjoying chocolate tastings along the way.

For something more physical, the Hunter Valley Smash Room provides a controlled space to break plates and wine bottles, with optional add-ons available. Uncorked is a purpose-built, fully air-conditioned axe-throwing facility where groups can test their aim and try to pop a cork, with guidance from the team. Groups of up to 18 can be accommodated per hour for axe throwing. The venue also hires electric bikes for self-paced rides through the wine country, including visits to local wineries and attractions.

Sutton Estate was established by Glenn and Phillippa Sutton in 2012, with the stated aim of helping visitors enjoy their time in the Hunter Valley wine region. Food and drink packages can be preordered, including cheese platters, lunch options, sparkling wine and local chocolate. There are also combined activity packages for larger groups, as well as a romantic package for two to five people that includes selected activities, a picnic lunch, chocolate and sparkling wine. Bookings are essential; the venue is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 7pm, and special activity bookings outside those times may be possible by arrangement. The range makes it particularly suited to couples, families choosing the chocolate room, and groups wanting more than a standard winery visit.
