Yuelarbah walking track

Yuelarbah walking track is a scenic day walk through Glenrock State Conservation Area near Newcastle, combining coastal bushland, waterfalls, picnic spots and elevated views in one return route. The track covers 6.8 kilometres and is suggested to take two to three hours, making it a substantial outing without requiring a full day on the trail. It is rated Grade 3, with medium accessibility.

The walk begins at a wheelchair-accessible raised boardwalk before following Flaggy Creek through wet gullies and coastal rainforest. Along the way, walkers pass two waterfalls and reach Glenrock Beach, where the route finishes before returning. Leichhardt’s lookout sits about halfway along the track and provides views across Glenrock Lagoon. The changing scenery gives the walk a strong sense of progression, from shaded creekside vegetation to open coastal outlooks and beach or headland views.

There are several places to pause, including the picnic area at Flaggy Creek and spots around Glenrock Beach. Bringing a picnic lunch, drinking water, sunscreen and a hat is recommended by NSW National Parks; binoculars may also be useful for taking in the surrounding landscape. The track forms part of the Great North Walk, the long-distance route stretching 250 kilometres between Newcastle and Sydney, giving this local walk a connection to a much larger walking experience.

Yuelarbah is suited to walkers looking for a nature-focused outing close to Newcastle, whether travelling independently or with a small group. Its mix of rainforest, creek, waterfalls, lookout and beach makes it more varied than a straightforward bush track, while the suggested two-to-three-hour duration allows time for breaks and sightseeing. A guided Glenrock twilight tour also uses the track, with a focus on spotting wildlife such as echidnas, sugar gliders, possums and owls as they become active after sunset. Dogs and other pets are not permitted in the park, so visitors should plan accordingly.
