Bombala Walking Track

Bombala Walking Track offers a short coastal bushwalk through Glenrock State Conservation Area in Merewether, Newcastle. The 1km return route takes around 15 to 30 minutes and winds through coastal forest, with glimpses of the Pacific Ocean before descending to secluded Dudley Beach. It is listed as Grade 3 and hard, so a reasonable level of fitness and suitable footwear are worth considering.

The walk’s main reward is the transition from ridge and bushland to the beach. Dudley Beach is a place to swim, fish or surf, while a rock platform at its southern end reveals a fossilised forest at low tide. You can finish at the beach or continue along the coastline towards Merewether, making the track a useful starting point for a longer coastal outing.

There are also opportunities to pause for wildlife and lookout views. The source notes that whales migrate through these waters in winter and spring, and that dolphins may be seen from the viewing platform. Birdwatchers can bring binoculars, while a hang-gliding pad beside part of the track offers a view of thrill-seekers launching over the ocean. Pack drinking water, sunscreen and a hat, and check current alerts because the track can close in poor weather or during periods of fire danger. Dogs and other pets are not permitted in the park.
